Trailblazing a new path for live sporting events.

Trailblazing a new path for live sporting events.

Pulse is a live-streaming platform for distance sports like marathons, triathlons, and downhill bike races.

One of the most interesting and vital parts of Pulse is its Event page, which turns watching athletes hurl down a mountain into an even more thrilling and interactive experience.

My role • Product Designer

I took the lead on designing this feature from start to finish and overcame multiple challenges to put the viewer in the driver's seat of their viewing experience.

The challenge

The Event page is crucial for Pulse's success, providing a cost-effective and entertaining way for event organisers to live stream their events.

The main challenges were:

• Live GoPro streams

• Real-time GPS athlete tracking

• Live chat from the viewers

• Commentary streaming options

• Timeline that controls everything else

• Map plotting the location of all the athletes

The planning, the work, the solution

There was a lot of features to cram into this platform, so immediately, we needed to get our priorities straight. I chatted to some commentators, active sports viewers, and event producers to really get a feel on how they consume these live streams.

Progressive disclosure

Due to there being so much information and on top of all that, most of them are moving!

We made good use of showing specific information only when the viewer dives deeper, a lot of hover states.

A messy timeline

Holding this entire event together is the timeline. This is a vital piece of UI, the timeline, as the name hints, controls the time of the whole event and all its features, from the live streamed videos, to the other live streams at that time, to the map, and finally to the chat…. yea it’s a lot isn’t it?
